The Tata Institute of Social Sciences was founded in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. It was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 1944. (Mumbai). Section 3 of the University Grants Commission considers TISS Mumbai to be a university (UGC). Infrastructure and Facilities at TISS Mumbai

Admission to TISS Mumbai

TISSNET is a computer-based common entrance test administered by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences to students seeking admission to M.A. programmes at all of its campuses. Students will be shortlisted for stage 2 based on their TISSNET performance. The first step is the shortlisting phase; no reservation requirements apply at this time. TISS Online Assessment (OA) is the second stage of the TISS Mumbai PG admissions screening process. The main aim of stage 2 (OA) is to assess the interest and suitability of a candidate for the programme selected. TISS Online Assessment (OA) is divided into two parts:

online personal interview and extempore discourse on a specific topic (OPI). The aggregate final score is based on the first and second stages of the TISS Mumbai selection procedure. The following are the marks for various components: TISS NET (objective type test): 100 marks; TISS Online Assessment (1. extempore commentary on a specific topic (100 marks); 2. online personal interview (100 marks). TISS publishes the results on its official website, which students can access by providing their login credentials. Following the announcement of the results, TISS publishes the final merit list, followed by the OML (open merit list) for candidates from all categories. TISS publishes a distinct category-wise merit list after assessing candidates in the OML.

Students interested in pursuing M.Phil. or Ph.D. degrees at TISS Mumbai must take the Tata Institute of Social Sciences Research Aptitude Test (TISS RAT). The Research Aptitude Test evaluates students’ research and analytical abilities, while the personal interview evaluates their research aptitude, competence, topic knowledge, and readiness to join the research stream. TISS RAT lasts 2 hours and the maximum amount of marks a student can receive is 100. Shortlisted students will be notified for a 100-point interview.
